課程概述

Course Description:
A close reading of the Latin text of the De Rerum Natura of Lucretius. Extracts will be read from Books I, II, IV, & V. Students will receive a course package including the selections, a commentary and full vocabulary. The course will include both the translation and interpretation of the following: 1. The Theory of Atoms. 2. Atoms and Senses. 3. A Theory of Evolution..
Students will be expected to be familiar with the assigned readings and secondary literature, some of which is listed in the enclosed shortened bibliography.

Course Objectives
To push your Latin translation skills to an advanced level.
1. To better understand the dactylic hexameter and other elements of Latin poetry.
2. To better understand Lucretius’ place in both Roman and English Literature.
3. To learn more about the culture and history of the late Roman Republic.
4. To examine Epicureanism and its influence on the modern world.
